Back Step Pass vs De La Riva Guard
Marcelo walks through variations for Back-Stepping against de-la-Riva Guard: Disallow your opponent's attempt to apply a knockdown by stabilizing your base as you step backwards; grip onto your opponent's collar or place your hand overhead as a post while monitoring their free-leg with your opposite hand. Try to use your grips to prevent your opponent from inverting up onto their shoulders when you convert across into the negative. Oftentimes, you can extract your foot held by your opponent's hand with a strong contraction and rip free out from their DLR-Hook. If at any point you notice your opponent's elbow open away from their centerline, drop down and claim an Under-hook with Head-Control for a slower but favorable Reverse Half-Guard Pass. If your opponent's chin is open, you can launch yourself around their head and wrap up a Guillotine-Choke straight out of your Back-Step.
