2 Part Lesson — Marcelo insists that every time you land after sweeping, you have to be aware of your opponent's available countermeasures: [I] Stop all of your opponent's options after your favorite sweep; i.e. you must know exactly what limbs and grips you offer up after rising on top, e.g. If you finish a Tripod Sweep, watch out and block for a follow-up Triangle Choke. [II] If you know your opponent will be able to lock you inside Half Guard after a sweep, immediately begin looking for an underhook to complete a pass after the sweep. If you lose the chance to pummel and underhook and sprawl, create a contingency plan: if you lose the undehook in Half, perhaps switch things back into your favor with a Leg Over Pass. Always look for your next move toward the submission; training to win by an advantage never yields successful longevity and happiness in this sport.
