Advanced Lesson Part 5 of 5 -- Marcelo eloquently sums up the point of having his students tire themselves out from training scenarios wherein one partner tries to stall out the other in order to win: It is hard to blame an athlete for letting the clock run down when they are up on points in the finals of Mundials. Not many would dare risk everything they're worked for just to preserve the integrity of competive spirit that comes from always seeking for a true finish. One can expect their opponent to do everything within their power and do whatever it takes to get their hand raised at the end, even if it means resorting to deliberate stalling. That's why it is so important to train under unfair conditions or nonideal circumstances; e.g. when you're exhausted, or when your opponent/partner doesn't want to engage because of the righteous fear that they would help develop your ability to attack them back. Possibly, you could face a minor injury during the lead-up to an event, or even right in the middle of an important match. How you choose to handle the situation will be dependent on how willing you are to deal with adversity, and whether or not you've trained for that specific moment. We cannot expect to survive against what we are not prepared for, or what we aren't willing to truthfully face. The more we learn to cope with the physical discomfort that comes from earnestly pushing the pace, and honestly accept when we aren't performing to a preconceived level, the more likely we will be ready for the inevitably unexpected thralls of high-level competition when it counts.
