Respecting Your Opponent
Marcelo reminds his students on how to properly act on the mat: Avoid distractions that can become misconstrued during training with your partner; refrain from conversation while engaged in a roll. Focus on refining your technique rather than misspending energy on sending signals or trying to affect your opponent's inner psychology. When you win a match, be humble in victory; don't ruin your moment with excessive celebration. Treat others as you wish to be treated, especially when the tables are turned. Exercising good behavior begins with working with your partners to create a healthy and positive environment for growth that can even spread outside the mat into your daily life.
